We’ve lived so long under the spell of hierarchy—from god-kings to feudal lords to party bosses—that only recently have we awakened to see not only that “regular” citizens have the capacity for self-governance, but that without their engagement our huge global crises cannot be addressed. The changes needed for human society simply to survive, let alone thrive, are so profound that the only way we will move toward them is if we ourselves, regular citizens, feel meaningful ownership of solutions through direct engagement. Our problems are too big, interrelated, and pervasive to yield to directives from on high.

The Real News Network is based in Baltimore, Maryland and this gives them and their staff direct access to the recent conflicts between people and police that has erupted in violence and the bringing in of the National Guard. The conflicts stem from the death of another African-American while in custody of the local police. TRNN appear to be doing a very good job of bringing reality to the coverage of these events, but also trying to understand the events by examining historical and other factors. Because major media are once again doing a very poor job of coverage, I highly recommend viewing their other videos of these events in Baltimore.
