We’ve lived so long under the spell of hierarchy—from god-kings to feudal lords to party bosses—that only recently have we awakened to see not only that “regular” citizens have the capacity for self-governance, but that without their engagement our huge global crises cannot be addressed. The changes needed for human society simply to survive, let alone thrive, are so profound that the only way we will move toward them is if we ourselves, regular citizens, feel meaningful ownership of solutions through direct engagement. Our problems are too big, interrelated, and pervasive to yield to directives from on high.

WATCH: Selling Extinction

It appears to me that Extinction Rebellion is a capitalist organized movement in Britain to enlist ordinary Brits in an effort to preserve capitalism that is threatened by climate destabilization and other environmental causes. As would be expected, and as the video claims, it appears that ordinary Brits will have no opportunity to make any significant decisions about the policies that the movement will promote.

Likewise, I think these characteristics are the same as the Green New Deal that is promoted by our capitalist masters in the USA. The very name is an attempt to feed off the memory of President Roosevelt's New Deal that prevented the worst effects of capitalist-caused Great Depression. In reality, I think that the devastating destruction of assets (and people) during WWII saved capitalist economies. Major capitalists during the 1930s opposed FDR's New Deal and actively fought it. They even organized a coup attempt against FDR. In response to his critics, he once replied that he actually saved capitalism from his critics.

I don't wish to discourage attempts to rescue us from extinction as a human species. I would advise British activists to get in touch with Green Anti-Capitalist Front. However, this is the last chance at survival and I want us to get it right. To get it right, requires ordinary humans to be in control of such a vital effort, not a tiny segment of capitalists.
