I think Brennan's performance illustrates how much the Empire's political operatives enjoy playing with the minds of the American people. They have gotten away with the practice for so long that they are easily tempted into doing it. 
White House officials are now correcting some vividly recounted details about how Osama bin Laden died. Or, just maybe, the psychological operations work in shaping public perception is now complete.
